Wedo have assessed the current and future climate risks impacting Iraq's water and agriculture sectors. This assessment will guide Welthungerhilfe Iraq (WHH) in developing program interventions to enhance climate resilience and reduce vulnerability. We have assessed the impact of climate change on water resources in Iraq, including Availability and quality of drinking water, Irrigation water quantity reduction, Water quality degradation (e.g., salinization), The impact of water scarcity on agriculture and impacts of climate change on vulnerable groups, particularly: Small-scale farmers, Women, Youth, Communities residing in areas highly affected by climate change events


The project has targeted the following areas:

  • Kirkuk
  • Dhi-Qar
  • Basra
  • Diyala
  • Anbar  

The project has been done using the following methods

  • Desk study

  • Filed work through:

    •  Household survey (1500+)

    •  Key informant interview (40+ interviews) 

    •  FGDs with stakeholders (10 FGDs, 2 in each governorate)

  • Data analysis

  • Providing assessment reports and recommendations

  • Integrating findings into the organization's future programming

  • Presenting results to the donor

Results and Outcomes:

  • Identify current and future climate impacts and vulnerabilities
  • Analysis and assessment of the climate risks impacting the water and agriculture
  • Analyses and assessing the impact of climate change on food security, income, employment, and potential social issues like community tension and conflict
  • Develop actionable recommendations and programming integration WHH
  • Presenting findings and recommendations to WHH
  • Presenting findings and results of climate risk assessments.to stakeholders
